Ausbildung Guide
Ausbildung in Germany for Foreigners
If you want to do an Ausbildung in Germany, start here. This page gives you the full picture: what Ausbildung is, who can apply, what the visa requires, how much you earn, and what happens after you finish.
Ausbildung is Germany's vocational training system. In a betriebliche Ausbildung you work in a company, earn a training salary, and go to Berufsschule, the vocational school part of the program. For non-EU applicants without a university degree, Ausbildung is one of the few paths that gets you in, gets you paid, and eventually gets you a residency permit — but it only works if you understand the rules early.

Why people choose this route
- →A paid path into Germany
- →A profession with long-term job demand
- →A way to build work experience while learning
- →A route to a skilled worker residence permit later
Ausbildung can do all of that. But it is not an easy shortcut. You still need German, a convincing application, enough money to survive the first months, and a company willing to train you.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ausbildung a degree?
No. It is a formal vocational qualification, not a university degree. It is state-recognised and tied closely to real jobs.
Can non-EU citizens do Ausbildung in Germany?
Yes. If you get a training contract and meet the visa requirements, you can apply for a residence permit for vocational training under §16a AufenthG.
Is Ausbildung always paid?
Company-based Ausbildung is paid. School-based programs follow different rules and may not pay a normal monthly training salary.
Is this route good for permanent residency later?
It can be. After completing training and moving into qualified employment, many graduates switch to a skilled worker residence permit and later a settlement permit.
